Lewis and Clark Women’s Soccer Building a “Tribe Mentality” Ahead of 2025 Season
GODFREY, Ill. — With preseason training underway, Lewis and Clark Community College women's soccer head coach Justin Bernaix is looking to build on lessons learned from last fall and forge a unified squad ready for a postseason push.
When Bernaix reflects on 2024, one moment still stands out, a September draw against top-ranked Iowa Western. That performance, he says, showcased the potential of a fully committed roster. But by the district semifinal in late October, a mix of injuries and shifting team dynamics had altered the momentum.
"The slight pivot from 'us/we' in September to 'I/me' in late October, coupled with some injuries, fizzled our momentum," Bernaix said. "We are forging a bit of a 'tribe mentality' this season."
The Trailblazers' primary objective remains clear: win the Region title to secure the top seed in the Central District tournament and make a run at the national tournament. Off the field, Bernaix is equally focused on creating a strong athlete experience, preparing players for their next step after LC.
Preseason energy has been high, with players eager to hit the field for their first scrimmage. The team's opener isn't until Aug. 29, giving the roster extra time to mesh, a potential advantage given this year's blend of newcomers and returners.
Sophomores Maddy Kuhn and Ella George are leading the charge in setting team culture, while newcomers Anitz Zurita, Abby Knight and Kamille Grohmann are expected to play significant roles, particularly in the midfield and backline.
Defensive cohesion has been a strength early, allowing Bernaix and his staff to focus on sharpening the attack and generating scoring opportunities from multiple players.
While the compressed two-month schedule of back-to-back weekly matches can be demanding, Bernaix believes consistency in preparation, and a willingness to adapt, will keep the Trailblazers resilient.
"Sometimes, a bit of change, a different exercise, a team outing, or even a new restart idea helps with motivation," Bernaix said. "But overall, our resilience will come from the players themselves… their willingness to work and fight for one another."
Lewis and Clark opens its season Aug. 29, aiming to start strong and keep the "tribe mentality" intact all the way through the postseason.
