Trailblazers Close Regular Season United, Shift Focus to Region 24 Quarterfinal
GODFREY, Ill. — The Lewis and Clark Community College men's basketball team closed out its regular season with a decisive home victory Saturday, finishing on a high note as postseason play looms.
Head coach Kavon Lacey said the win was a reflection of the team's unity throughout the week, not just during the 40 minutes on the floor.
"I'm most proud of how together we were throughout the entire week, not just on the floor, but in the locker room, in study hall, at the baseball games, in film sessions," Lacey said. "That togetherness carried over into the game."
The Trailblazers executed with poise down the stretch, trusting the preparation that defined their regular season.
"We just trusted and believed in each other," Lacey said. "We were determined to play Trailblazer Basketball, make no excuses, trust what we set up and practice every day, and have fun doing so."
Lewis and Clark maintained control by sticking to its defensive principles and offensive rhythm, responding to key momentum swings with composure. Lacey emphasized that resilience has been central to the program's identity.
"We understand that during a 40-minute game not everything is going to go our way," he said. "But it's how we respond in those moments. We have a belief system and a process that we trust. We have to stick to it when adversity hits."
Sophomore leadership proved pivotal in securing the final home victory of the season. David Marshall Jr., Dwight Lomax Jr., Xavier Hassler Godfrey, Trevon Bond and Mario Brown Jr. each played significant roles, both statistically and emotionally, in their last game at home.
"Our sophomores really played a huge role in obtaining that last home victory of their Lewis and Clark careers," Lacey said. "All week long they were determined to finish the right way."
With the regular season complete, the Trailblazers now shift their focus to postseason play. Lacey views the upcoming tournament as a fresh opportunity rather than a continuation of the past few months.
"It's very important," he said. "We look at it as the start of a new season. We've learned a lot of lessons, and now it's about the best team executing and playing their best basketball when it matters."
Lewis and Clark will open postseason play Tuesday at Danville Area Community College in the Region 24 Quarterfinal. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. CST.
